Guideline for Lab
Assistants Workshop 1
E4E
and new computer users
(English for Everyone
Handbook 2004, p. 17) |
Lab Lessons: 3 x 1 hour
Materials: Worksheets 1 - 3. No disks required
Students may work in groups of not more than 3
LESSON 1
Step 1
Before the lesson, divide the task:
- 1 assistant to assign logins and passwords,
record attendance
- 1 assistant to speak to the group
- all assistants to assist students individually
throughout
Step 2
Introduction : Explain
to the whole group that:
- they will learn to use two programs (English
for Everyone (E4E) and a word processing program) as tools for writing
- E4E uses an Internet browser: explain terms on
Worksheet
-
that they will not type in
E4E; they will use the mouse to click and find info, then use the info in
their own work
Step 3
Show the whole group how to :
-
log in to student server (if needed)
-
search for icons for E4E, and others, on the desktop
-
open English for Everyone
Allow practice time, to explore E4E and to move from E4E to word processing
program and back.
Step 4
Tell the whole group how to navigate through the program using the
navigation bars on the left :
-
choose start → writing
→ essays → home (on left navigation bar)
-
choose writing → reports
→ abstract → home
-
choose general skills → teach them to look at the home menu to see where they
are (the topic in black)
-
explain the need for navigation and orientation: the program is a web through
which they have to find their way
-
teach them to use the commands inside the program, not the browser tool bars
at the top
Step 5
Allow time for learners to explore E4E at their own
pace and in their own directions.
Step 6
10 minutes before the end of the lesson, teach students to:
-
close E4E, save work, close the word processing program
-
log out
-
note their user code and password if they have one
Step 7
Prepare for the next group by getting this group out of the lab promptly.
Students attend labs 1-5. After that they complete worksheets at their own pace
(asynchronous learning) in their own time, at practice times, in consultation
with lecturers or assistants.
